It's getting downright eerie how so many well-known figures have left us in the past calendar year. This past Wednesday, one of our very favorite folksingers, Irish legend Tommy Makem, passed away at age 74 in Dover, NH. We here at the Lair, though not completely surprised at the news, are heartbroken nonetheless at this loss of one of the LairMistress's foremost musical role models.
Does anyone know if memorial tributes to Tommy will be held anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, especially Seattle, where the LairMistress is based? We would love to help put on and participate in any such event; as of now, all we've had a chance to do is light candles several nights in a row at the Home Lair, as well as toasting the Bard of Armagh with pink margaritas the other night.
In any case, please let us know if you know of anything being done in memory of Tommy Makem in the Northwest in the near future. In the meantime, light a candle, sing an Irish song, recite a poem by Yeats, say a prayer or meditation, sign a guestbook or message board with your condolences, or otherwise remember Tommy in your own way. Slán abhaile agus míle buiochais, a chara dhil!!
